Overview

IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching (BEd) is a professional qualification aimed at students who want to pursue a teaching qualification for grades R to 3. This IIE qualification will produce highly skilled, innovative teachers for schools around the world. A range of other education-related careers will also be open to you. If you do not want to start with a higher certificate you can start your teaching career with the IIE Higher Certificate in Childhood Care and Education.

Course Outline

DURATION

Face-to-face: This is a four-year full-time qualification offered by The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) at IIE Rosebank College. Face-to-face lectures take place during the day on weekdays at the following campuses: Braamfontein, Pretoria CBD, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Polokwane and Durban.

TEACHING PRACTICE

The Teaching experience module is to give students an opportunity to observe Mentor Teachers, their roles and duties, documentation, assessment system, classroom management, teacher co-operation and development, school system and school within the community context. They will carry out the practical applications of the teaching principles, theories and concepts they have acquired. Teaching experience is a compulsory module that is done each year of the four-year qualification. IIE Rosebank College will pair each student with the respective school to ensure that the experience is as diverse as possible. During these sessions, students will be evaluated at the respective school by their Mentor Teacher, Lecturer or Supervisor. The timing of these sessions is carefully mapped at IIE Rosebank College and students are required to complete 22 weeks of teaching experience within the qualification.

THE BREAKDOWN IS AS FOLLOWS:

  • Year 1: 1 week of observation and three weeks of Teaching Practical
  • Year 2: Five weeks of Teaching Practical
  • Year 3: Six weeks of Teaching Practical
  • Year 4: Eight weeks of Teaching Practical

The IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching has an attendance rule associated with the qualification, namely that student attends 80% of the classes (lecture) for the stipulated modules. LECTURE ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS (FOR 2022 AND BEYOND)

Students will be allowed access to the main school-based Teaching Experience per relevant year if:

  • they have met the 80 % lecture attendance requirement for each of the identified modules as is aligned to Teaching Experience for that year.

Dealing with Exceptions:

In cases where students have not met the 80 % lecture attendance requirement for one or more of the identified modules as is aligned to Teaching Experience for that year:

  • Students will be expected to achieve a combined 80 % lecture attendance (i.e. average) across the identified modules on the condition that no single module attendance falls below 70 %.

Students who fall into this category will submit a one-page motivation for Teaching Experience access to The IIE's Brand School of Education Campus Programme Manager for consideration by The IIE's Brand Head of School: Education in consultation with The IIE's Central Academic Team.

Important Information

  • To be awarded this qualification, a minimum final year mark of 50% for each module must be achieved.
  • Qualification such as a Higher Certificate, the English requirement may be waived on successful completion of an appropriate proficiency test.

POLICE CLEARANCE

IIE006: Work-Integrated Learning Policy:

All students undertaking an academic qualification with a school-based WIL component will be required to have a valid police clearance certificate (PCC) or an Afiswitch Criminal Check Certificate as accepted by SACE, on commencement of their Teaching Experience component in a school.

Course Accreditation

The IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and is registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) as a 482-credit qualification on Level 7 (SAQA ID No:  96408). On successful completion you will receive a Degree in Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching from The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), a leading registered private provider of higher education in South Africa.

This qualification is also fully recognised by the Department of Basic Education for the purposes of registering as a teacher and teaching in a South African school.
