Not Just a Diploma: How an IIE Rosebank College Alumni Turned Challenges into Career Wins

Challenges after varsity don’t define your limits, they refine your purpose. With resilience and learning, every obstacle becomes a step toward career success.

Stepping out of college and into the professional world can feel like opening the first page of an unfamiliar book. For Thabo Motloung, an IIE Rosebank College alumnus who completed his IT Software Development Diploma in 2021, that first chapter was filled with unexpected twists. IIE Rosebank College, the brand of the Independent Institute of Education, provided Thabo with not just technical skills but a platform to discover his own strengths and personality.

While many knew Thabo as a confident, lively personality, he discovered at IIE Rosebank College that true growth required more than just flair; it demanded focus, resilience, and self-belief. What he initially thought was a straight path from coursework to employment quickly revealed itself to be far more nuanced, underscoring a lesson many graduates learn the hard way: opportunities favor the proactive, not just the prepared.

What he initially thought was a straight path from coursework to employment quickly revealed itself to be far more nuanced, underscoring a lesson many graduates learn the hard way: opportunities favor the proactive, not just the prepared.

Thabo’s final year at IIE Rosebank College was intense, dedicated, and driven by a desire to excel academically. Yet, upon graduation, the real-world application of his skills proved challenging.

Software Development, his chosen field, did not align perfectly with his strengths, and the absence of work experience made landing a first job feel like an uphill battle. “I wanted to give up,” he recalls, “but I realized that preparing for the world of work isn’t just about completing assignments, it’s about showcasing your capabilities, networking, and selling yourself effectively.” His advice to graduates is clear: build a portfolio, connect with industry professionals, and start presenting your value before your final year ends.

The turning point came when Thabo decided to diversify his skillset. By acquiring certifications that complemented his academic modules but required less programming, he was able to demonstrate practical value to employers. This strategic pivot ultimately led to his current role as a Systems Administrator at Motus.

Thabo’s journey highlights an essential truth for every new graduate: the bridge between education and employment is built not solely on degrees, but on adaptability, continuous learning, and the courage to explore new avenues. The professional world may not mirror classroom learning, but it rewards those willing to evolve.

Beyond technical skills, Thabo credits IIE Rosebank College with shaping his mindset. The institution helped him blend his natural charisma with intellectual rigor, fostering confidence in discussions, leadership, and conflict resolution. Graduates entering the workforce carry not just knowledge but a refined sense of self, capable of navigating diverse environments with grace. The journey from student to professional is rarely linear, but as Thabo’s story shows, embracing challenges, learning continuously, and believing in oneself transforms a chapter of uncertainty into one of opportunity, growth, and success.
