As Nelson Mandela once said, "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." Rebecca Tlabago’s story embodies this spirit of resilience and determination.
As Nelson Mandela once said, "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." Rebecca Tlabago’s story embodies this spirit of resilience and determination. As an IIE graduate from IIE Rosebank College, A brand of The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), she launched her Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) at Tembisa Commerce and Entrepreneurship with focus on Tourism Hospitality high school in Tembisa, the east of Johannesburg on May 16, 2025, Friday afternoon.
She inspired Grade 12 and 11 learners with her story and passion for giving back. As a testament to the power of purpose and passion, Rebecca's journey from student to social change-maker is a beacon of hope for young people across South Africa.
By giving back to her community, she is not only empowering the youth but also creating a ripple effect that can inspire others to do the same. Research has shown that giving back can have a profound impact on both the giver and the receiver, fostering a sense of purpose, self-worth, and social connection.
Rebecca's story began with a desire to forge her own path, despite expectations to follow in her parents' footsteps. While still in college, she recognized the harsh realities of South Africa's job market and acted, launching Lucrative Communications, a PR and media agency. However, her true calling was in empowering the youth, and she created YEP to uplift high school learners through education, leadership, and future-focused training. As scholar Brené Brown notes, "Vulnerability is not weakness; it's our most accurate measure of courage." Rebecca's willingness to take risks and be vulnerable has enabled her to make a meaningful impact in her community.
“I never thought I’d have a chance to learn from someone who truly understands what is like to be in our shoes”, says a grade 12 student who attended Rebecca’s talk. “But Rebecca’s story showed me that hard work and determination, I can achieve anything I set my mind to. She’s not just a role model but, she is a reminder that dreams are possible.”
Rebecca's motivation for giving back stems from her own experiences as a young student. She believes that role models can change pupils' perspectives and inspire them to take their futures seriously. This is echoed by scholar Howard Gardner, who emphasizes the importance of role models in shaping the minds and values of young people (Gardner, 2006). Through YEP, Rebecca is not only empowering the youth but also reshaping the narrative of what young black women in business and education can achieve.
IIE Rosebank College played a significant role in shaping Rebecca's journey, providing her with the confidence and practical skills to build something meaningful. Today, she credits her parent institution for supporting her endeavours and inspiring her to expand YEP nationwide. As scholar Daniel Goleman notes, "Mentorship is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction." Rebecca's experience highlights the importance of mentorship in helping individuals achieve their full potential.
Rebecca's vision is to scale YEP across the African continent, providing opportunities for young people to nurture their talents and potential. Her mantra, "Everything I need is already within me," serves as a reminder that confidence, courage, and clarity begin from within. Through her work, she is building a life of purpose that uplifts others, proving that with the right mindset, support, and drive, it's possible to make a lasting impact.
Rebecca's story is a testament to the power of giving back and the impact one person can have on others. As scholar Martin Seligman notes, "The meaningful life is one that is characterized by us.
