From Entry-Level to Influential: Developing Leadership at Every Career Stage

Leadership is often misunderstood as something that comes with a title, but for many professionals, it begins much earlier through everyday actions and mindset shifts.

Leadership is often misunderstood as something that comes with a title, but for many professionals, it begins much earlier through everyday actions and mindset shifts. For Nqobile Dlamini, a Career Services Coordinator at IIE Rosebank College, Braamfontein Campus, leadership has been a journey shaped by initiative, curiosity, and continuous growth. Reflecting on a defining moment, she shares: “A moment that made me realise my previous role was shaping me into a leader was when I began taking initiative beyond my own responsibilities.

I was always curious about what other departments were working on and looked for ways I could assist. I would assess challenges and try to come up with practical solutions, rather than waiting to be told what to do.” This proactive mindset marked the beginning of her transition from simply completing tasks to making meaningful contributions.

As this mindset developed, so did her understanding of leadership within the environment of IIE Rosebank College as a brand of the Independent Institute of Education. “Over time, I noticed that I was not just completing tasks but actively contributing to problem-solving and supporting others. That shift made me realise I was developing leadership qualities, not just functioning as an employee.” Her leadership style was further shaped by the managers she encountered throughout her academic and professional journey. “Each of them had unique strengths, and there was always something valuable I learned from each one… I have taken these lessons and incorporated them into my own leadership style.”

However, growth did not come without challenges. Early in her career, she took too much effort to prove herself. I felt like I had to do everything on my own… It became overwhelming and, at times, frustrating.” This experience became a turning point, teaching a critical lesson: “Leadership is not about doing everything yourself, but about working with others and trusting them.” Learning to delegate, collaborate, and ask for help allowed her to become a more balanced and effective leader.

Equally important has been her intentional effort to build a strong professional reputation. “I’ve always been intentional about how I show up in every space… being consistent, reliable, and respectful in how I work with others.” She emphasizes accountability and integrity as key pillars of credibility. “If I make a mistake, I take responsibility and learn from it… credibility is built through actions, not just words.” Through this approach, she has earned trust and respect across every role she has held.

Today, her focus is on creating impact beyond herself, particularly by supporting graduates entering the workforce. “I hope my work will equip graduates with the tools, guidance, and confidence they need, Ultimately, I want them to feel prepared, empowered, and inspired.” Looking ahead, she hopes to be remembered as someone who made a meaningful difference: “Someone who created opportunities, supported those around me, and led with integrity… using my role to uplift others in the industry.”
