The purpose of this qualification is to expose learners to the general principles within local government and the foundational knowledge for entry-level positions in this field.

Overview

​The purpose of this qualification is to expose learners to the general principles within local government and the foundational knowledge for entry-level positions in this field. This qualification includes the following modules: introductory concepts in public administration, Local Government structures and administration, customer relationship management, ethics, local government finance and human resource management.

This qualification will provide opportunities for IIE Graduates from Rosebank College wishing to enter the public sector, and existing public servants who wish to enhance their career prospects.

DURATION
This is a one-year qualification offered by The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) at IIE Rosebank College.

SKILLS YOU WILL DEVELOP 

On completion of this qualification, learners will have the practical and interpersonal skills that are essential to become competent employees in local government.  Learners will be exposed to the concepts, principles, and procedures that lead effective local government initiatives through this course. Newly qualified students will also begin their careers as public sector administrators before moving up the corporate ladder.

DEVICE AND CONNECTIVITY SPECIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR ONLINE STUDY:

  • Reliable internet connection (we recommend 5-10 GB of data per month and an internet speed of at least 0.15 Mbps)
  • Desktop PC or laptop with at least an i3 processor and 4GB RAM memory
  • Windows 8 or macOS 10.15 (Microsoft Office 365 is available as a free download for IIE students), and Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge Chromium or Firefox
  • A working webcam and microphone
  • An uninterrupted power supply is also highly recommended

Examination

Exams are written at an exam centre and, in some instances, online. These details will be specified in your programme assessment schedule.

The Independent Institute of Education (THE IIE) offers you the opportunity to start with a higher certificate and progress into a diploma or degree. IMPORTANT INFORMATION 

  •  To be awarded this qualification, a minimum final year mark of 50% for each module must be achieved.
  • This factsheet is valid for the 2024 academic year only.
  •  Free software is available to all registered IIE Rosebank College students. The software includes but is not limited to MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access and MS Outlook, which come with the Office 365 bundle. Students can access the software using their RCCONNECT.edu.za email address. 

DEVICE REQUIREMENTS 
To get the best out of the blended learning experience, you will need the following minimum requirements: a computer or laptop with WI-FI, Windows 10 or higher, Intel Pentium 4 Processor or Higher, 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or a System on a Chip (SoC), 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit (Or Higher) for your RAM, 16 GB for 32-bit OS 32 GB for 64-bit OS (or Higher) Hard Drive space, DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver for your Graphics card, and a Screen Resolution of a minimum 1280 x 800.
