The IIE Higher Certificate in Construction and Engineering Drafting aims to equip the student with the theoretical background and practical know-how of a combination of drawing skills to enable the student to function well in a drafting office in the business environment. The qualification also aims to familiarise the student with the necessary computer literacy skills to handle computer aided drafting effectively.


Upon completion of this qualification you can work as a draughtsman or Architectural Drafter.


When you obtain your qualifications you will be able to transfer concepts onto paper, have patience, perseverance and​ must pay close attention to detail. You will develop your detail skills and should be able to concentrate for long periods of time.


Full-time: This is a one year full-time programme offered by The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) at Rosebank College. Lectures take place during the day on weekdays. Programme offered at the following campuses: Braamfontein, Pretoria CBD and Durban CBD.


This certificate is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE). It is also registered with the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at Level 5 (SAQA ID NO: 58666). On qualifying, you will receive a Higher Certificate in Construction and Engineering Drafting from The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), the leading registered private provider of higher education in South Africa.

 To register, you must meet one of the following entry requirements:

  • NSC (​National Senior Certificate​) with Higher Certificate admission- A minimum of 30 % for English is required; OR
  • ​A NC(V) (National Certificate (Vocational)​) with  Higher Certificate admission – A minimum of 40 % in English on either First Additional Language or Home Language level, with a minimum of 40% in Life Orientation and a minimum of 50% in four vocational subjects; OR
  • A SC (without endorsement) or equivalent– A minimum of 5 subjects must be passed.
  • Additional admission requirements apply to students with a School of Tomorrow (SOT) certificate. Please contact the Head of Department at the campus closest to you for more information.


Mature Age Exemption:

  • Candidates must have attempted matric/Grade 12, attained the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with three years' work experience and proven ability relating to the proposed programme as well as adequate communicative skills; OR
  • Candidates must have attained the age of 45 before or during the first year of registration.
RPL – demonstrate suitability for admission in terms of Senate's resolution 6.6 of 20 October 2005 which allows for Senate's discretionary conditional admission (if applicable).


If you are an international student, you must ensure that:

  • you have an equivalent qualification to the aforementioned;
  • your equivalent qualification is e valuated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA);
  • you have a valid study visa issued in the name of The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) that covers the duration of your studies.  ​
