This bookkeeping course offers a focus on bookkeeping while also laying the foundation for further study so that you can pursue a finance degree. This qualification is suited for individuals with a fair ability to understand figures and mathematics, and those with an interest in business, project coordinating and those looking to work in a corporate business environment.


Upon completion of this qualification you can pursue a career as a Bookkeeper, Office Administrator or Administrative Assistant.


Graduates of The IIE Higher Certificate in Bookkeeping will be able to balance books for small companies, pay salaries and collect money from debtors.


Full-time: This is a one year full-time qualification offered by The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) at Rosebank College. Lectures take place during the day on weekdays. An online learning management system - RC Learn - is used to support the face to face lecturing and tuition in such a way that students are able to direct their own learning and have many opportunities to work online independently.  Offered full-time at our Polokwane, Bloemfontein and Pietermaritzburg campus only.

Part-time: This is an 18 month part-time qualification, please consult our student advisor for full qualification fees. There will be a future fee as this is an 18 month qualification and the fees displayed on the website are annual fees and not the full qualification. Qualification offered part-time at the following campuses: Braamfontein, Pretoria CBD and Durban CBD.


This certificate is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) at a Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). It is also registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA ID NO: 90554). On successful completion you will receive a Higher Certificate in Bookkeeping from The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), the leading registered private provider of higher education in South Africa. 


Use this Higher Certificate as a stepping stone to furthering your academic career. Once you qualify you will have the wonderful opportunity of studying The IIE Bachelor of Business Administration degree through Rosebank College.


 To register, you must meet one of the following entry requirements:

• A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Higher Certificate admission- A minimum of 30 % for English is required; OR
• A National Certificate (Vocational) NC(V) with Higher Certificate admission – A minimum of 40 % in English on either First Additional Language or Home Language level,  with a minimum of 30 % in either Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy, a minimum of 40% in Life Orientation and a minimum of 50% in four vocational subjects; OR
• A Senior Certificate (SC)  (without endorsement) or equivalent– A minimum of five of the six required subjects must be passed.


Mature Age Exemption:

• Candidates must have attempted the  Senior Certificate, attained the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with three years’ work experience and proven ability relating to the proposed programme as well as adequate communication skills; OR
• Candidates must have attained the age of 45 before or during the first year of registration.

RPL – demonstrate suitability for admission in terms of Senate’s resolution 6.6 of 20 October 2005 which allows for Senate’s discretionary conditional admission (if applicable).


If you are an international student, you must ensure that:

  • you have an equivalent qualification to the aforementioned;
  • your equivalent qualification is e valuated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA);
  • you have a valid ​study visa issued in the name of The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) that covers the duration of your studies.  ​
