The lack of adequate management and business management skills in South Africa is one of the contributors in the high failure rate in the small, medium and micro enterprises (SMME) arena. This qualification focuses on the financial, economic and business management aspects of commerce, but includes important business-related modules to ensure a balanced perspective of modern corporate business to inform the environment within which the graduates must operate and to ensure a well-rounded qualification.

This IIE Diploma in Commerce in Business Management will help address the national skills shortage and graduates will be equipped to take up positions as: Office administrators; managers and/or entrepreneurs.


This IIE Diploma in Commerce in Business Management equips students with core business principles and management skills to be able to work in and manage a small to medium size enterprise. Students will acquire essential skills intended to enhance their own careers. They are also taught how to make a meaningful contribution to the strategic growth of any business or to one day manage their own business enterprises.


Full-time: This is a three-year full-time qualification offered by The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) at Rosebank College. Lectures take place during the day on weekdays. Qualification offered at the following campuses: Bloemfontein,Braamfontein,Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Polokwane and Pretoria CBD

Alternatively, a Higher Certificate (or equivalent) or Advanced Certificate in a cognate field may satisfy the minimum admission requirements to diploma studies.


If discipline not cognate at least 20% of credits must be academic literacy or numeracy related


Senate Discretionary Admissions 

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)Candidates must demonstrate suitability for admission in terms of Senate's resolution 6.6 of 20 October 2005 which allows for Senate's discretionary conditional admission (if applicable).
USAf approved cognate foundation programme Candidates who have completed an USAf approved cognate foundation programme from a registered and accredited provider may be admitted.
Transfer studentsCandidates who have successfully completed at least 120 credits on the first year of a cognate 3- year diploma may be admitted.  However, if a student completed less than 120 credits, the admission criteria on the NSC or equivalent or higher certificate or advanced certificate apply.
OQSF qualificationsCandidates with an OQSF Level 5 cognate qualification may be admitted, provided the OQSF qualification has at least 120 credits at NQF Level 5.
General Education Development (GED) - An USA qualification developed by the American Council on Education (ACE)Candidates with a GED qualification may be admitted if they have a SAQA Evaluation certificate with NSC L4 equivalence as well as A score of at least 38 for Academic Literacy (AL) and a score of at least 38 for Quantitative Literacy (QL).

 ​Candidates must have attempted the  Senior Certificate or equivalent, attained the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with three years’ work experience and proven ability relating to the proposed programme as well as adequate communication skills; OR Candidates must have attained the age of 45 before or during the first year of registration.

In order to be awarded this qualification, you must have achieved a minimum final year mark of fifty percent (50%) for each module of the programme, and have met all Work Integrated Learning requirements.​​ ​ In some, but limited instances some modules may change. At the time of registration, please check that the entry requirements and fees have not changed.​​

Software to be used in your discipline include MS Excel, MS Word, MS Power Point and MS Outlook, which come with Office 365 bundle. These can be accessed for free using the FTP file server with your rcconnect email account.
