The benefits of lifelong learning

With graduation season upon us, many graduands are preparing to move on to the next thing, while others remain unclear

about what that truly means. However experts agree, graduates shouldn't rush to stop being students.

Lifelong learning

"We cannot develop to our full potential, nor achieve our career goals if we stop learning when we graduate," says Adrian

Garden, Teaching and Learning Manager at Rosebank College. "The world does not stop developing. In fact, the rate of

development is increasing so much that a lot of what we are taught in the formal education environment is outdated before

we even graduate, especially in technical subjects. If we don't embrace lifelong learning as a principle, we will soon find

ourselves frustrated and limited in terms of what we can achieve in our personal and professional life."

How does Rosebank College promote lifelong learning?

All modules developed by The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE) for our students are based on the principles of

lifelong learning so that they develop the crucial skills of critical thinking and the ability to anticipate outcomes. They incorporate

21st century learning as well as authentic Learning skills in all of their content so that students graduate with the ability to continue

learning and applying these transferable skills to a variety of contexts in their personal life and their careers.

Garden shares some of the benefits of lifelong learning.

Lifelong learning allows you to keep abreast of the latest trends and developments in your field of interest. You also become

a well-rounded individual because you learn about yourself and how to put your best foot forward.

"A lifelong learner has the soft skills that are so sought after in the workplace such as inquisitiveness, communication

skills, empathy and motivation as well, because your learning is based on internal motivation rather than external motivation

which doesn't last as long. Your qualification will get your foot in the door of a potential employer but the skills you acquire as a

lifelong learner will ensure that you get the job."
